THE NEW SILICONE SOFT LENSES
The next generation in soft lenses is here in the form of silicone hydrogels. All prior soft contact lenses were previously made of a similar material with minor differences, such as water content. The new soft lenses include silicone, which is the main component of gas permeable hard lenses. Gas permeables have always been a healthier option, but not always the most desireable in terms of comfort, flexibilty of wear and design availability. Now the new silicone hydrogels offer a soft lens with improved oxygen delivery to the eye, which improves the eye health, cuts down redness and helps with dryness. The newest design is the Acuvue Oasys lens, which offers one of the highest oxygen delivery and the smoothest surface for improved comfort. If you have tried silicones before and didn't like the feel, try the new Oasys. Focus Night and Day offers the highest oxygen, with approval for continuous wear up to 30 days. There are several designs available to correct astigmatism with silicone, especially the Advance for Astigmatism, which has a new stabilization method for improved vision. Multifocal lenses are now available with the new Purevision Multifocal. Call for an appointment to try these new lenses. |

LASIK CONSULTATION
LASIK CONSULTATION Considering laser surgery for your vision? We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about LASIK. We do all the preliminary evaluations and post surgery follow ups as panel doctors of the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii. Drs.Tyrie Jenkins and Carlos Omphroy are the most experienced LASIK surgeons in Hawaii. We have worked with Drs. Jenkins and Omphroy for over 10 years now and have had excellent results with them. Laser Eye Center of Hawaii (LEC) has the most up to date laser technology with the VISX Star 4 Laser, which incorporates Wave Front technology to guide the laser in the CustomVue procedure. The CustomVue procedure has given us greater accuracy and improved vision, sometimes even better than what is attainable through glasses or contacts. Also new are the iris registration and Intralase lasers. Iris registration locks onto the pattern of the iris, which is the colored portion of your eye. If the eye rotates or moves during the procedure, the laser will lock on and move accordingly. The Intralase laser is the newest addition. Now the flaps for LASIK are created using a new laser that allows for our surgeons to make thinner, more accurate flaps than before. The combination of the Intralase laser and the VISX Star 4 with custom view and iris tracker is the state of the art for laser correction and is only available in Hawaii at LEC. This special combination of services is called i-LASIK and available only at Laser Eye Center of Hawaii. There are several other laser centers in Hawaii, but not all use the most up to date and premium lasers. Not all centers are the same. LEC Hawaii uses the top of the line VISX Star 4 with Custom Vue correction for every procedure. Schedule a screening to see if you are a good candidate for i-LASIK. |
EYE NUTRITION
Eye health is gaining more awareness, as more research has been done on supplements. The main supplements that we recommend here are a good multi-vitamin, such as MAXIVISION, which is available in our offices. The main cause of conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts are the presence of free radicals that rob the tissues in our bodies of oxygen. Anti-oxidants are a prime buzz word that many are aware of. A good daily multivitamin will provide you with the antioxidants you need to help maintain the tissues in the eye. Also important are supplements like lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin. These important carotenoids are gotten or derived from diet from such things as leafy, dark green vegetables and other sources. But for most of us, we don't eat enough of these to provide us with all the nutrients we need. That's where a good daily vitamin comes into play. These carotenoids have also been shown to reduce risk of heart disease, cancer and progression of cataracts. The cheapest form of vitamins are pills. These are less expensive, but also don't get enough vitamins into your body for the most part. Liquids are the best, but are costly and difficult to store. Capsules offer the best balance of cost and effectiveness. The other most commonly recommended supplement is Omega-3 oil, which is mostly needed to boost oil production, important in lubricating the eye, as well as being good for digestion and the heart. The two readily available forms are Fish Oil (salmon) and Flax ssed oil. Eating fatty fish like salmon is good, too, but there is only so much fish you can eat. |
