Beginning March 5, 2012, each individual applying for an initial Hawaii driver’s license or permit or renewal of licensing will be required to provide proof of:

Identity

Legal Presence

Social Security Number

Proof documents to verify legal presence include U.S. birth certificates and U.S. passports. Foreign born applicants may provide other documents, such as a Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization, Resident Alien Card, or a valid foreign passport with a Visa and I-94.

Documents presented for proof of identity, legal presence or social security number must be valid originals or certified copies. Photo copies or fax copies of proof documents are not acceptable. For a complete listing of acceptable documents for proof of identity, legal presence and social security number, refer to the List of Acceptable Documents – Hawaii Driver’s License. http://hawaii.gov/dot/hawaiis-legal-presence-law

As with anything there has been a lot of questions about what is needed to renew your license. A lot of people rushed in for vision certificates to beat the March 5 deadline, but remember, you can only renew within 6 months of expiration.

To simplify, here is what you need:

1. Proof of Identity (1 of the following documents)

          U.S. Birth Certificate

          U.S. Passport

          Foreign Passport

          Military ID

Foreign birth certificate with Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship

Valid U.S., State, or local government issued ID

Other forms of acceptable ID can be found on the above website

*If you have a name change, you must also provide documentation of change, like a marriage certificate or Court Order for Name Change

2. Proof of Legal Presence

All of the above qualify for legal presence, except Foreign Passports. You must also provide:

          Valid unexpired Visa and I-94

3. Proof of Social Security (1 of the following)

          SS card

Wage and Tax Statement Form W-2 (if SS is on form)

1099 (1099R, SSA-1099, non SSA1099) (if SS is on form)

Paystub (if SS is on form)

All forms must either be originals or certified copies

Other acceptable forms can be found on the above website if you do not have the items already listed.
